Deep Plane Facelift in Dubai

The UAE's only surgeon with two licenses. And that changes the result.

Deep Plane Facelift is a facelift technique where the surgeon works not with the skin, but with the deep tissue layer beneath it (the SMAS layer and ligaments). It's a core specialty of Dr. Maier's facial practice: the result looks natural because the skin isn't pulled separately from the rest of the face.

The main reason facelifts sometimes look unnatural — the “wind-blown” effect, the “mask” look, smoothness without expression — is that the surgeon lifts only the skin. Skin stretches again over time, so the result fades faster. Deep Plane Facelift repositions the entire deep facial layer as one unit, together with the skin above it, without pulling in different directions. This produces a more natural and longer-lasting result.

The technique demands considerably more surgical experience than a classic SMAS facelift: the work is performed in close proximity to the facial nerve, where there is no room for error. That's one reason why not every plastic surgeon offers Deep Plane Facelift — while Dr. Maier, with his second license in maxillofacial surgery, works with these deep facial layers regularly.

Indications include midface ptosis (sagging), pronounced nasolabial folds, loss of jawline definition, and jowls. The surgery is usually combined with neck work (platysma lift) for a cohesive result, and may also be paired with eyelid surgery — the doctor discusses this at the consultation, depending on what the in-person exam shows.

The surgery takes place at Gargash Hospital under general anaesthesia and takes several hours. Hospital stay is 1–2 days. Most swelling and bruising resolve within 2 weeks, at which point most patients are ready to return to normal social life. As with any surgery on deep tissue, the result fully matures over several months.

The cost of a Deep Plane Facelift depends on the scope of correction and is determined at the in-person consultation — it is higher than for more superficial techniques, which reflects the complexity and length of the surgery. The doctor names the exact figure right away, no “come in and we'll see”.

Common questions

What people usually ask.

How is Deep Plane different from a regular facelift?

A classic facelift more often works with the superficial layer and the skin, which can create a “pulled” look. Deep Plane repositions the entire deep facial layer, so the result looks more natural.

How safe is it?

The surgery is more complex than a classic facelift and requires greater surgical experience because of its proximity to the facial nerve — which is why it matters that it's performed by a surgeon with specific experience in this technique.

How many years does the result last?

The result is longer-lasting than with superficial facelifts, but the exact duration is individual and discussed at the consultation — tissue ageing continues for everyone, it's a question of pace.

Does it need to be combined with blepharoplasty?

Not necessarily — it depends on the condition of your eyelids. The doctor assesses the whole face and proposes a plan that gives a cohesive result, rather than treating one area in isolation.
